In Kiss Cam, teen author Kiara London asks, what’s a little harmless kissing between friends?
Juniper, Jasper, and Lenny have been friends forever and co-own a vlog channel called WereVloggingHere. Their fans are huge “shippers” who believe that Juniper and Jasper are perfect for each other, and, despite warnings from friends and family, a simple Truth-or-Dare inspired kiss soon spirals out of control into a whole new world of making out and surprise kisses.
Juniper and Jasper’s relationship begins to shift. But as fan requests for different “Kiss Cam” segments keep pouring in, Juniper puts her worries aside and convinces herself that it doesn’t mean anything. After all, it’s just kissing… right?
“How am I supposed to know?” I ask irritably, trembling a little as I try to shake Jasper awake.
“Did he faint?”
I glare at him from across the room. “Don’t just stand there, Lenny!”
“Well, is he breathing?” he asks, bouncing across the room to kneel down beside me.
I place my finger under his nose and watch his chest. Nothing. My eyes widen in panic, and I frantically grab for his wrist. Somewhat relieved, but still shaking, I announce, “He’s still got a pulse.”
“You’re the only one who knows anything about CPR, June,” Lenny reminds me urgently.
“Then call 911! God, Lenny!” I practically scream as I tip his chin up.
Swallowing nervously, I pinch his nose closed and steady his head.
“I haven’t done this in real life before….”
With my heart pounding hard in my chest, I squeeze my eyes shut and seal my lips over Jasper’s for the first rescue breath. Except things don’t go how I remember from Red Cross CPR training, because a dummy doesn’t suddenly grab the back of your head and stick their tongue in your mouth. My hands slip on the kitchen floor, and I fall on top of Jasper, who is clearly perfectly conscious.
Next thing I know, Lenny’s throaty, boisterous laugh is filling the kitchen, Jasper is holding me in place while delivering fierce kisses, and I’m frozen still with glowing red cheeks.
It takes me a moment to realize what’s going on—too long, because just as quickly as it began, Jasper is releasing his grip on me.
I fly off him and he sits up, red in the face and grinning shyly. He quickly turns to face the spice shelf behind me.
“Kiss Cam!” Jasper yells, and a giggle-ridden Lenny sprints across the room to take the camera off the shelf and point it directly at me.
“I hate you guys!” I screech, and surge at Lenny. All this time they had me thinking that something was wrong—but no, they had been planning the first Kiss Cam. They had been slinking around all day, sneaking glances at me, sharing matching smiles, and getting me all wound up for a Kiss Cam!
I slap every part of Lenny I can reach that he’s not shielding with the camera. “We got you so good!” he mumbles through a fit of laughter.
Then I turn to Jasper, who is curled up in a ball on the floor, laughing his lungs out, and shove him.
I scoot back and stand up. “That was the worst! I seriously thought you would die on me, Jas! You guys, I feel so sick right now. Oh my God,” I ramble, my hands shaking more furiously than before. I feel like I can barely speak, but I’m laughing, too. Laughing because I’m embarrassed and that was so ridiculous. “Whose idea was this?”
Jasper coughs and stands. “Now,” he muses, “I believe the username was ChloeAnne.”
I wipe Jasper’s spit off my lips with the back of my hand. “What was the request?”
“Reenact the lifeguard scene from The Sandlot.”
