“What I needed was a Jake replacement. A replacement crush.”

The Replacement Crush was cute and quirky, but still held an important message.

Vivian is excited to go back to school and see the boy she fell in love with over the summer. But when she arrives, she learns that he’s already moved on with someone new. Heartbroken and unsure of how to move on, she decides to find a replacement crush with the help of her best friend, Jaz. The replacement crush must be someone who she can have fun with, but not someone she could ever fall in love with. The plan seems to be intact, until Vivian realizes that she’s falling for the new guy, Dallas, who’s perfect for her in every way except one: that she doesn’t want to fall in love.

“‘Why is it cool for Jake to be a total player, but whatever girl he’s been with is a slut? You ever hear of a double standard?'”

This was such a cute book that read like a teen romantic comedy. I loved Vivian, the main character, who was a book blogger (like me!). She was relatable, and I understood the reasons she made her decisions. If you’re crush finally started to seem interested in you, you would’ve made the same decisions as her and failed to see their true colors. She was optimistic and vulnerable, just like any teenage girl.

I loved the relationship between her and Dallas, and how it was obvious that they were meant to be together even though she was scared to admit it. I shipped them throughout the whole book, and I was very happy with the adorable ending.

This book was surprisingly feminist, which I loved! It brought up a lot of messages about double standards and what it means to be a feminist.

“‘Girls can be strong and independent, but still want to fall in love, but with the right person who appreciates all those qualities.'”

I do think this book is better for younger readers of YA, who can handle the discussion of sex. The vocabulary in this book was a little bit immature, with words like “amazeballs” and “McNerd” popping up frequently. While it was cute, some of the words were a little too cringe-worthy for my taste.

This book was the perfect cute, fluffy read, and I totally recommend if you’re looking for a quick, readable book.

About the Author

lisa-brown-robertsLisa Brown Roberts still hasn’t recovered from the teenage trauma of nearly tweezing off both eyebrows and having to pencil them in for an entire school year. This and other angst-filled memories inspire her to write YA books about navigating life’s painful and funny dramas, and falling in love along the way.

Her almost forever home is Colorado, though she occasionally pines for the days when she lived within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean. Her house is full of books, boys, four-legged prima donnas, and lots of laughter.
