The Merciless by Danielle Vega
Star Rating: ★★★1/2
This book is not for the lightheaded.
“It’s a cat. A dead cat. Skin’s been peeled away from the cat’s body in strips. Flies buzz around its head and inside its mouth, crawling over its tongue and teeth.”
And that’s not even the worst of it. Hair is torn out, nails ripped off, even the tiniest bit of blood is described in extremely gory detail. Most of the book takes place over the course of one night, so that was a little disappointing and got really boring after a while.
The story follows new girl Sofia Flores as she becomes friends with the mean, popular girls. These girls are super religious and believe that another girl named Brooklyn is being possessed by the devil. They kidnap her and bring her to an abandoned house, where most of the story takes place. There, they attempt to get the devil out of her by torturing her.
As a horror fan, I did enjoy this book. I’d recommend it to fans the TV shows Scream Queens or Supernatural. It’s Mean Girls meets Stephen King, like many other reviews have said. There are a shocking amount of parallels to Mean Girls, actually. Here are a few:
“Riley puts her hands on my shoulders. ‘Sof, do you now how pretty you are?’ she asks. ‘Guys, isn’t Sofia pretty?'”
“Most girls would just start a burn book.”
And the characters are pretty much interchangeable with the Mean Girls characters: Riley is Regina, Sofia is Cady, Brooklyn is Janis…I could go on.
In the end, I would recommend this book if your looking for a quick horror read.
